D.A.R.E (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) began in Los Angeles in 1983. D.A.R.E was developed to provide kids with the skills and the knowledge they need to avoid involvement in drugs, gangs, and violence. The program in taught in a classroom by a police officer from a local law enforcement agency.

The Flora Police Department has been a part of the D.A.R.E. program since 1987. The current
D.A.R.E. officer is Brian Lane who was certified as an instructor through the Missouri State Police
Academy in November of 2004. Officer Lane has been a police officer for 6 years. The goal of the
D.A.R.E. program is to significantly reduce/eliminate the use of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs
and the use of violent behavior by young people. Currently the D.A.R.E. program is taught to the
4th grade students who receive a 5 week portion of the curriculum and the 6th grade students
receive a 12-14 week curriculum which is culminated by an activity day and a graduation from the
program.
